In 1986. by increasing the cylinders volume of xv1000 Virago from 981 cm3 to 1063 cm3 new model xv1100 Virago apeared. Yamaha xv110 Virago was being produced from 1986. until 1999. That was already the second increase of cylinders volume of almost the same Yamaha Virago model (first time from xv920 to xv1000, and second time from xv1000 to xv1100). On UK market this model appeared three years later, in 1989.

In order to achieve the better operation of bigger engine for new model bigger flywheel was used. In 1994. motorcycle got two-piston brake calipers.

Contrary to EU market where the most common model was xv535 Virago, on US market the most common model was xv1100 Virago.

In 1995. on Japanese market, and one year later on other markets (from 1996. until 1999.) Yamaha xv1100 Virago was being produced with throttle position sensor (TPS). The purpose of this sensor is to detect the status of high vacuum occurring in the engine during low rpms (especially during idle mode or deceleration) and to inform TCI to make correction in ignition timing in order to optimize the engine operation and to reduce the engine overheating.

xv1100S model got spoke wire rims, rectangular mirrors, brake discs with holes, chromed suspenders and buttoned seats.
