Yamaha xv400 is the rarest model in the Virago series and was mainly intended for the Japanese or Eastern markets, but can also be found in the European market (e.g. Sweden). It was produced in the period from 1984 to 1994. There was no large difference in construction between the xv400 and xv535 except for the cylinder volume (399 cm3).

Like model xv535 Virago from 1987, at the beginning xv400 Virago had only the lower tank with volume of 8,6 L. As with xv535 model, in 1989 it was changed and real upper tank was added resulting with total volume for gasoline of 13,5 L.

It's interesting to note that Chinese copy (i.e. production according to Yamaha license) of this model is motorcycle Lifan LF400 which has almost identical look, uses the same parts, and has similar technical characteristics. The only difference is that Lifan has chain-drive, contrary to xv400 Virago which has shaft-drive.
