Yamaha Virago xv535

Yamaha Virago xv535 started with production and was introduced on US market in 1987. One year later it was introduced on UK and EU market too. This is air-cooled, V-twin V2 (two valves per cylinder) engine with cylinders in V shape fitting the angle of 70°. xv535's engine is based on engine from model xv750 but with reduced volume. The air induction was implemented through air filter mounted within the motorcycle tubular frame, under the smaller tank (that was a dummy tank at the beginning), while the main tank was residing under the driver's seat.

The drive was implemented using 5-level gear and wet multi-plate clutch with the shaft for transmission of power to rear wheel. The engine chassis is made of pressed steel in the form of a tube through which air goes into the carburetor. The front suspension was made with classic telescopic forks, and rear suspension with double adjustable shocks. Front brake has one disc, and rear brake is drum brake. At the beginning the seat was still one-piece in the manner of UJM which will later be changed to a two-piece seat. The ignition system was built in (for that time) modern transistor technology (TCI).

The xv535 is styled in a new chopper manner with two shiny exhaust pipes on the right, a raised steering wheel and a two-stage seat for the driver and passenger. The wheels were made with spokes.

The difference between the xv535 versions for the US and UK (i.e. European) market was in the lights. In the American model, the lights were switched on automatically by starting the motorcycle and there was no switch to turn on the lights on the steering wheel, while in the British version there was a switch to manually turn on and off the lights and also there is a position light (and corresponding engine lock).

The dummy tank on xv535 from 1987. - you see there's no tank cap,
also notice on the control panel the right red fuel reserve indicator
which was later removed in newer versions of the model

Virago xv535 from 1987 and 1988 had a fuel sender built under the lower (then only) fuel tank and a red light on the control panel as an indicator of when the fuel had reached the reserve. This was abolished as early as 1989 during the first revision when the fake tank was replaced by a real one. .

Technical revision in 1989

In 1989, the first major revision of this model was made. In fact, these were corrections to the detected technical deficiencies. That year, instead of a fake upper tank, a real tank was installed in order to increase the driving autonomy of this motorcycle at least to some extent. Namely, the lower tank had a volume of only 8.6 L, which gave a insufficient driving autonomy of about only 150 km, which customers often complained about. By adding the real upper tank, the total fuel volume increased to 13.5 L which gave greater driving autonomy. The fuel level sensor in the tank was removed then (!?) and an electromagnetic switch is added under the tank for switching to the reserve.

In the same year, in addition to the twisted chopper steering wheel (UP), a flat bobber steering wheel (FLAT) was also released, and the brake discs also received slots to reduce braking noise.

In the first versions of this motorcycle, certain shortcomings with the starter engine were noticed, so in 1993 it was replaced by a better and more reliable one, and later some other modifications were made with the starter clutch.

the model still has single piston brake calipers,
but got slots on the disk itself (later holes)

Redesign in 1994. - xv535S (Special Edition)

In 1994, more serious modifications were made to the appearance of the motorcycle: the tank was painted in two shades, more chrome parts were added (engine block covers, carburetor covers, etc.), the seat was made with buttons, a modern beak-shaped leg was added (whereby the corresponding relay of the legs was considered unnecessary any more and was removed from the electrical system of the motorcycle).

Some technical changes have also been made, such as the addition of carburetor heaters and the corresponding thermal switch. Then one big change was made in the ignition system of the motorcycle; the previous electrical system had two pick-up coils, one for each ignition coil. They were replaced by a single sensor coil, and the ignition system (TCI) circuits had to be changed to support that.

In 1995, single-piston brake calipers were replaced by double-piston ones.
Two-piston brake calipers and brake disc with holes, no more slots

Redesign in 1998. - xv535DX (Deluxe)

The last revision of the model was given the deluxe designation and the DX sequel (xv535DX). Only some stylistic modifications have been made to it (3D emblem on the tank as well as on the plastic side covers, egg-shaped mirrors, etc.), while in the technical sense there have been no major changes.

The Yamaha xv535 model is the best-selling Virago model on the European market.
