Yamaha xv920R

Model xv920R (does not have name Virago) was a request from European Yamaha importers who asked for their own V-twin but a machine more in tune with the sporting European riders. It was launched in 1981. for American market along with first Virago model xv750. It had, as xv750 Virago model, V-twin engine with angle of 75° between cylinders. Although xv920R had some bigger volume of cylinders than xv750, this model, contrary to xv750, kept old style of European touring motorcycle, and that was not accepted by American customers too much.

Yamaha xv920R - 1982

Like Virago model, xv920R had a steel frame which was used as part of air system for conducting the air into the engine. On first wheel it had two brake discs and on rear wheel there was a drum brake. xv920R did have a chain drive system but not conventional one. It had a fully enclosed drive chain running in a grease bath. At each end of the chain drive a cast aluminum cover shrouds the sprocket.

Soon in 1982. the production of this model was abandoned on American market because it had lousy acceptance by customers and a lot of unsold specimens. In 1981. this bike had a code xv920RH, and in 1983. the code xv920RJ. It was substituted with model xv920 Virago with shaft drive. So, models xv920R and xv920 Virago are two quite different motorcycles.

Yamaha TR1

Yamaha TR1 (does not have name Virago) was being produced in period from 1981. until 1983., and was being sold until 1985. Actually it was the extension of existing model xv750 Virago, with old design and dedicated to European market only.

Yamaha TR1 - instrument table

This Yamaha model used the same cylinders, crankshaft and engine block like xv750 Virago, only cylinder valves were enlarged in order to support bigger engine volume of 981 cm3. This model had little bit better acceptance on European market, but Americans did not like it very much because it still looked like old fashioned UJM stereotype.

This model was (at the beginning) equipped with new Yamaha's CYCOM instrument table. That was totally new thing but seemed to be the bad choice.

It was very advanced technology in that time; instrument table with LCD screen showing the speed and rpms in electronic form, it gave the info about side-stand position, brake fluid level, fuel level, electrolyte level in battery and level of engine oil. However, this technology appeared not to be reliable enough in conditions for motorcycle operation and very soon (the very next year, in 1983.) it replaced with more traditional analog gauges.
