Virago engines are segmented into three groups here (small, medium, big). Technically and mechanically they do not differ too much within the group, while there are other major technical differences among the engines of the different groups, apart from the volume.

- engine oil = 2,6 L (2,8 L with filter change)
- carburetor = 2 × Mikuni BDS34 (downdraft, Φ 34 mm)
- brakes = front: 1 brake disc (Φ 298 mm), rear: drum
- battery = 12V12Ah (YB12AL-A2)
- air filter = HFA4502 (52W-14452-00-00, 2GV-14451-00-00)
- spark plug = NGK BP7ES (Φ 14 mm), gap 0.7-0.8 mm
- spark plug cap resistance = 10 kΩ
- cylinders = rear #1, front #2
- front tire = 3.00S-19 or 90/90-19

The group "big" - xv700, xv750, xv920, xv1000, xv1100

- carburetor = 2 × Mikuni BST40 (sidedraft, Φ 40 mm) (1988. onward)
- brakes = front: 2 brake discs (Φ 298 mm), rear: drum
- battery = 12V16Ah (YB16AL-A2) for xv700/xv750/xv920
- battery = 12V20Ah (GM18Z-3A) for xv1000/xv1100
- air filter = HFA4702 (42X-14451-00-00)
- spark plug = NGK BP7ES (Φ 14 mm), gap 0.7-0.8 mm
- spark plug cap resistance = 5 kΩ

* The production of old models xv700, xv920, and xv1000 had been finished before Yamaha changed from Hitachi to Mikuni carburetors so these old models were always using only Hitachi HSC40 carbs. At the beginning xv750 and xv1100 models were produced with Hitachi HSC40, but they too changed to Mikuni BST40 in 1988.

Virago xv535 model owners usually use a front tire dimension 100/90-19 while the original dimension is 3.00-19 which is 90/90-19.
