Maintenance

  • Spark plugs change every 10,000-15,000 km (6,000-9,000 mi)
  • Engine and clutch oil SAE 10W40 or SAE 15W50 - change every 6,000-7,000 km (4,000 mi)
  • Shaft oil 0.2 L SAE 80W90 (hypoid gear oil) - change every 25,000 km (15,000 mi)
  • Brake oil DOT3 or DOT4
  • Fork oil SAE 10W

Note: in original Virago documentation (service manual) it is assumed that Virago motorcycle is driven about 1,000 km per month on average and all change intervals (change of engine oil, shaft oil, spark plugs etc.) are calculated according to that. The assumption is that an average driver makes about 12,000 km per year and according to that the spark plugs should be changed once per year, the shaft oil should be changed every second year etc. If a driver makes less than assumed 12,000 km/year, these change intervals could be prolonged to more realistic (probably double) periods. But one should keep in mind that an oil characteristics are affected by time passed and environment conditions regardless of how much the motorcycle is driven.

So, if you do not make 12,000 km per year with your bike but 6,000 km only, that's more realistic, you can change the engine oil every second year. But, if you make only 4,000 km per year or less, that does not mean that you should change your engine oil every third or fourth year because in this case an oil loses its lubrication abilities and other properties by aging before than by wearing and it should be changed after 2 years as well. Of course, nothing bad will happen by changing the engine oil more often, even better for the engine, but one should find an optimal change period for the engine and the budget.

Warning: do NOT use fully synthetic oils (!) for Virago engine but semi-synthetic ones (!) because fully synthetic oils (primary intended for car engines) contain anti-friction additives which do have a bad effect on the operation of wet clutch. Contrary to cars, Virago (like many other motorcycles) uses so-called wet clutch where clutch plates are immersed within the oil and using fully synthetic oil with additives could cause the slipping of clutch plates.

Recommendation: do not spend big money on expensive oils - better buy more affordable oils, and change them more often.
