Induction coils

The ignition coil (ger. Zündspule, ita. bobine) is a transformer which transforms the low voltage pulse on primary coil (created from battery voltage of 12 V) into high voltage of cca 15 kV on secondary coil. Such a high voltage then ignites a spark on spark plug needed for burning of fuel-air mixture in combustion chamber.

This device exists only on gasoline engines and is not used on diesel engines at all because diesel engines do not need spark for fuel ignition. On diesel engines high compression of mixture creates so high temperature that diesel fuel self-ignites.

On primary side of induction coil (transformer) an interrupt of DC circuit (with 12 V low voltage from battery) creates high voltage (several thousands of volts) on secondary side of ignition coil (transformer). This high voltage is used for creating a spark on spark plugs needed for mixture ignition in cylinders. In order to get a voltage transformation, the voltage (and current) cannot be constant but it has to change. The voltage/current change (interrupt or pulse) on old ignition systems gives mechanical switch (platine) with condenser. On newer ignition systems the current interrupt in primary circuit is achieved using transistorized switch. Yamaha Virago motorcycles do have TCI (Transistor Controlled Ignitor) device which makes interrupt in primary circuit of ignition coil but it also defines the moment when ignition should occur (defines ignition timing).
The resistance of ignition coils:

xv500 and xv535
  • primary coil: 4,2 Ω ± 15%
  • secondary coil: 13 kΩ ± 15%
xv700, xv750, xv1000, and xv1100
  • primary coil: 2,7 Ω ± 15%
  • secondary coil: 13 kΩ ± 15%
The possible implementation of ignition system is that only one ignition coil provides the high voltage for spark plugs of more cylinders. But modern engines do have one ignition coil for each cylinder so Yamaha Virgaos do have two induction coils for its two cylinders. That avoids the need for a distributor device and high voltage connectors which are prone to failures.
